אוטובוס יאסוף אותנו למלון Best Western Amsterdam, שם נפקיד את המזוודות ונלך מרחק קצר לכיתת הלימוד שלנו, Pondok. נאכל ארוחת צהריים קלה, ונפתח את המסע במושב פתיחה חגיגי.
הפעילות המרכזית של היום היא City Quest: משחק היכרות עם העיר ועם דרכי ההתניידות בה. במהלך השבוע ננוע מנקודה לנקודה בעיר בעיקר בתחבורה ציבורית וזה הזמן לתרגל נסיעה בקווי המטרו והחשמלית, וגם לגלות את נקודות החן המפורסמות של העיר בהליכה רגלית. נתחלק ל-6 חוליות, כל חולייה תקבל מסלול ובו 6 נקודות שאליהן היא תגיע לאחר פיצוח כתב חידה קצר. נתחיל ליצור את אלבום התמונות של המסע וכל חוליה גם תבנה לעצמה את מפת המסלול שלה.
בתום המשחק נשוב אל Pondok לעיבוד בקבוצות האם, נשוב למלון להתארגנות בחדרים ולארוחת ערב.
זהו יום של מבואות והקשר.
נפתח את הבוקר עם ד"ר מרדית' גלייזר, חוקרת ומתכננת עירונית, שתספר לנו על השלטון המוניציפאלי באמסטרדם ועל אתגריה הנוכחיים של העיר, התכנוניים והאנושיים.
לאחר מכן נפגוש את ג'ושוע סראו, חבר בכיר בצוות החדשנות במשרד ה- CTO, Chief Technology Officer (מנהל הטכנולוגיות הראשי) של עיריית אמסטרדם. ג'ושוע ישתף אותנו בהשקפת העולם של אמסטרדם כעיר חכמה מובילה בעולם ויספר כיצד החדשנות והטכנולוגיה מסייעות לה במתן מענה מיטבי לתושביה ואל מול האתגרים המרכזיים.
לאחר מפגש עיבוד וארוחת צהריים ניסע לעיר Purmerend, השוכנת במרחק של כחצי שעה נסיעה צפונה מאמסטרדם, ושייכת למטרופולין אמסטרדם. לעיר היסטוריה ארוכה של כלכלה ומסחר מקומיים, ובשנים האחרונות היא חווה גידול מואץ שהעירייה נותנת לו מענה רב מימדי המכונה "פיתוח אינטגרטיבי": דיור, כלכלה ופיתוח קהילה לצד סוגיות של קיימות.

Director / Urban cycling Institute
Dr. Meredith Glaser is the Director of the Urban Cycling Institute, and an American urban planner, lecturer, and sustainable mobility researcher, based in the Netherlands since 2010. Her work focuses on public policy innovation, knowledge transfer, and capacity building for accelerated implementation of sustainable transport goals. Meredith is one of the world’s most experienced educators for professionals seeking to learn Dutch transport planning policies and practices. She has extensive experience with stakeholder facilitation, co-creation processes, and strategic planning and policy. She completed her PhD in Urban Planning at the University of Amsterdam and holds Master’s degrees in urban planning and public health from University of California Berkeley. She is on the advisory board of the CROW Bicycle Policy Program and for the Cycling Research Board. She lives in Amsterdam with her husband, two daughters, 6 bikes and no car.
Urban Innovation Officer, City of Amsterdam
Innovation Manager for the city council of Amsterdam. With more than 15+ years’ experience at the local government and 5 years managing strategy and innovation on digital city safety and senior policy advisor on smart city programs in its Chief Technology Office. Joshua’s Main topics of advisory are within public private partnerships on digital urban innovation such as cybersecurity (digital safety), drone regulation and applications, urban air mobility, connectivity and last-mile (event) security and safety in public spaces. Joshua is also a member of the advisory board of the RAI convention center for the 'Amsterdam Drone Week' and a member of project board at the 'Amsterdam Innovation Arena' community; building digital solutions for mobility, fan experience, safety, inclusion and sustainability in the world’s leading innovative stadium. Joshua has a bachelor in Business Information & Technology, studied music at the Amsterdam Jazz Academy and doing his masters study on Business Innovation (MBI). Apart from his job at the city Joshua is a (part-time) endorsed saxophone player and published music producer.

Daan studied Business Administration and holds a Master degree in Digital innovation. After leaving the VU University, Daan started working on several projects within the virtual reality domain. While doing some of the projects in the public sector, he started to gain interest in adding more value to society.
Today, Daan is developing initiatives that can improve a citizen’s customers journey, especially in terms of safety & security. In a public-private partnership he is trying to find the right improvements that can aid to the livability of the city. His aim is to create a ‘livable’ city. Not only by introducing physical assets, but also to explore the digital world and its applications in an urban environment. Daan is always trying to find the right balance between the different aspects that innovation brings along. In the end, it is about finding the right effective solution to improve a citizen’s journey, while taking all the different aspects such as feasibility, privacy and ethics into account.

את חלקו הראשון של היום נקדיש להיכרות עם כמה מהפרוייקטים האורבניים פורצי הדרך של אמסטרדם, המשמשים מודל לחיקוי עבור ערים רבות בעולם. נעשה זאת בקבוצות המסע, ודרך הרגליים.
קבוצת תל חי תצא לרובע אמסטרדם צפון, המשמש מעבדה חיה לניסויים עירוניים. בהדרכתם של נציגי הסוכנות העירונית Pop Up City, המתגוררים ופועלים ברובע, תבקר הקבוצה בפרוייקטים המובילים שבו ובינהם השכונה הצפה Schoonschip ומיזם De Ceuvel, ותלמד על התחדשות, בנייה על מים וקיימות, גם כהדגמה לתהליכים עירוניים ולשיתופי פעולה בינמגזריים.
קבוצת בן גוריון תבקר במזחים המזרחיים, אזור בעל מסורת וותיקה יותר של התחדשות עירונית, הבוחן היבטים של התחדשות עירונית גם בראי הזמן. בהדרכתה של קורנליה דינקה, בעלת סוכנות עירונית לקיימות המשמשת גם כמובילת פרוייקטים בפלטפורמה של העירייה לחדשנות, תבקר הקבוצה בפרוייקטים המובילים באזור ובינהם השכונה שאליה אין כניסה למכוניות, Funenpark. הקבוצה תלמד על התחדשות עירונית בדגש על קיימות ואיכות החיים של התושב, גם כאן כהדגמה לתהליכים עירוניים ולשיתופי פעולה בינמגזריים.
נשוב לכיתת הלימוד למפגש עיבוד, ואחר הצהריים נפגוש את איתי גרמי, חבר מועצת העיר אמסטרדם שנבחר לא מכבר. הוא יספר על עבודתו ועל נקודת המפגש שבין הפוליטיקה לדרג המקצועי, ועל תחומי האחריות שלו במועצה.

Pop Up City Co-founder and Managing Partner
Jeroen Beekmans (1985) is co-founder of the Amsterdam based Golfstromen, an agency for urban development. He’s also one of the founders of Pop-Up City, an online magazine about the city of the future. Between 2010 and 2016, Golfstromen researched gentrification in Amsterdam-Noord – the phenomenon where undervalued neighborhoods face an inflow of wealthier urban dwellers that push aside the older inhabitants and upgrade the level of facilities. To discuss the gentrification, Golfstromen launched Gentrification Battlefield, an ironic, fictive videogame where gentrification is shown as a battle between the old and new inhabitants. The trailer of the game was shown at MoMA, New York, in 2011. In 2016, a crowd mapping-project followed. The citizens of New York and Toronto were asked to draw their own, subjective frontline of gentrification in their city. Combining the maps, heatmaps were made that show an appealing image of the development of several areas.

Amsterdam Gemeenteraad – City Council
The city council is the highest governing body and consists of elected representatives of the people of Amsterdam. The city council determines the general policies of the City of Amsterdam and monitors if the College of Mayor and Alderpersons is properly implementing that policy. The College of Mayor and Alderpersons submits decisions to the council for approval. The council can respond to that in various ways or submit their own topics.
The majority of topics that are presented to the city council for decisions, are prepared beforehand in a city council committee. A city council committee is composed of the experts from the political parties. There are nine city council committees.

Co-founder & Urban Planner
Originally from Tel Aviv in Israel, Lior Steinberg is now settled in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. His first profession was as a computer programmer in the army. During these six years, he was always questioning “Why do traffic jams happen? When do they start? How do we solve it?”
After a stint in Berlin, Lior went on to study urban planning in Stockholm and later in the Netherlands, where he fell in love with cycling and with the way of living in Dutch cities. He then founded Humankind, and now works as an urban planner, consultant, and on urban-change projects. It’s in this capacity that Lior has had the chance to experiment, to give people what they need and want. He’s not ashamed to say it hasn’t always worked, but often it has.
Rotterdam is a city that is constantly changing. From being a city built around the harbor, automobiles, and factories, it is becoming a city for people. The city is experiencing this change: roads are narrowing, parking spaces are being converted to parks, old buildings are being replaced with sky scrapers, and bike infrastructure is being built. As part of the tour, we will stop at several locations in the city center to show how Rotterdam is creating this change:
In just a few years, a complete wasteland was transformed into a lively area that is now bustling with life. The central axe of this all is the striking bright yellow boardwalk: the Luchtsingel.
In 2011, the municipality of Rotterdam organized the first city initiative, an administrative instrument to stimulate administrative renewal and citizen participation. The inhabitants of Rotterdam were called upon to submit projects that would enliven the city and improve the quality of life in the city. An amount of 4 million has been reserved from the city initiative to implement the project.
A Board of Experts was installed to make a selection of projects independently of the College. Twenty Rotterdam Ambassadors traveled through the city in search of projects. The Board selected 10 entrants to present their project plan from which they made a selection of five finalists. All residents of Rotterdam were then given the opportunity to vote for their favorite initiative. After a campaign period of one month, the Luchtsingel won with 48% of the votes.
The initiator behind this drastic urban intervention was architecture office ZUS. They moved their own office to the Schieblock, an icon of the rebuilding period in Rotterdam. Once they were in place, they gathered all sorts of creative agency’s around them, starting with small start-ups, but later even attracting established cultural entrepreneurs, clubs and festivals. The 350-meter-long Luchtsingel formed the collective element with which ZUS blew new life into an area that had become in decay and isolated. It was this elongated wooden construction that became the backbone of a large urban development project. Within no time, the Central District – with the brand-new Central Station as its centre piece – and the renovated Hofbogen got connected in an innovative way, resulting in an uplift for the entire area. From drinks in a sunny backyard to dancing in Rotterdam’s latest pop temple and from urban farming (DakAkker*) on a roof to jumping on a trampoline in the Pompenburg Park.

"כלכלת בייגלה" היא דגל של הכלכלה המקיימת המודרנית, והיא מיושמת באמסטרדם כמודל לקונספט כולו, כפי שנהגה על ידי הכלכלנית הבריטית קייט ראוורת’. מנגד, יונקת תפיסת הדיור הסוציאלי ממסורת בת כ-120 שנים, שראשיתה בחוק שנחקק באמסטרדם כבר בשנת 1901 ונועד כבר אז להסדיר את הזכות לדיור לכל. תפיסה זו עדיין מיושמת בעיר בעוצמה ומשמשת השראה לערים רבות בעולם, המתמודדות עם אתגרי דיור הולכים ומחריפים.

Cycling is a simple means that connects to a wide range of very complex problems and challenges of contemporary cities. It is intertwined with many aspects of urban life in all its richness and complexity.
Academic attention for this has been very limited. A more structured approach is needed to map these complex relations, understand best practices and foster reciprocal learning between research and practice.
